THE APC HAFKIN PRIZE FOR 2004/5:
Recognising community connectivity projects for economic development in 
Africa
======================================================================

"Connectivity is a term referring to the means by which people are 
connected to or are able to access communications channels such as the 
internet, email, computer and people networks."

The theme for this year's APC Hafkin Prize recognises community 
initiatives that use the internet and other digital communication 
networks to access markets, skills and opportunities to derive real 
economic benefits.

The CRITERIA by which entries will be judged by our international jury 
include:

1. Positive economic impact

* The project demonstrates a positive economic contribution to the 
community
* Has a long term vision for sustaining impact which includes training 
and developing local expertise
* Provides an equal opportunity for participation by the community 
regardless of sex, religion, political persuasion or income levels
* Is documented so that others can learn from the model

2. Africa-driven and developing Africa

* Developed and implemented by people and/or organisations based in Africa
* Must be local and community-based

3. Sustainable use of technology

* Offers or makes use of technology that is available and supported locally
* Demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between technology 
and the needs of the community on the ground.

THE PRIZE IS OPEN TO: The competition is open to civil society 
organisations, government institutions, educational organisations, 
community-based groups, networks, social movements or individuals 
anywhere in Africa. Applications will be accepted in both English and 
French.

THE PRIZE: USD$7,500.00 will be shared amongst up to three winning 
initiatives.

Reconnaît les projets de connectivité communautaires
pour le développement économique en Afrique

« La connectivité renvoie aux moyens qui relient les personnes ou leur 
permettent d’accéder aux voies de communication comme internet, le 
courrier électronique, l’ordinateur et les réseaux de personnes. »

Le thème du prix de cette année reconnaît les initiatives communautaires 
qui utilisent internet et d’autres réseaux de communication numérique 
pour accéder aux marchés, aux compétences et aux possibilités pour 
obtenir des avantages économiques tangibles.

Les CRITERES par lesquels les inscriptions seront jugées par notre jury 
international sont les suivants:

1. Impact économique positif

* Le projet apporte une contribution économique positive à la communauté
* A une vision à long terme pour maintenir l’impact comprenant la 
formation et l’acquisition d’une expertise locale
* Donne à la communauté des chances égales de participation, sans égard 
au sexe, à la religion, aux opinions politiques ou au niveau de revenu
* Est documenté de sorte que d’autres peuvent s’inspirer du modèle

2. Être centré sur l'Afrique et favoriser son développement

* Développé et mis en oeuvre par des personnes ou des organisations 
basées en Afrique
* Doit être local et communautaire

3. Utilisation durable de la technologie

* Offre ou utilise la technologie disponible ou appuyée localement
* Comprend le lien entre la technologie et les besoins de la communauté 
sur le terrain.

LE PRIX EST OUVERT AUX ENTITÉS SUIVANTES : Le concours est ouvert aux 
organisations de la société civile, aux institutions gouvernementales, 
aux organisations d’enseignement, aux groupes communautaires, aux 
réseaux, aux mouvements sociaux ou aux particuliers partout en Afrique. 
Les demandes seront acceptées en français et en anglais.

LE PRIX : 7 500 $ US, sera partagé entre les trois initiatives lauréates.
