Recognising initiatives that are making it easy for people to start 
using free and open source software (FOSS)

In September, APC will award the $4,000 USD prize to up to three of the 
outstanding initiatives mentioned below.

The seven Chris Nicol FOSS Prize finalists in 2007 currently under 
consideration by an international jury of experts are:

-Extramadura's Technological Literacy and Free Software Plan, Spain
-Free Geek, USA
-Gleducar, Argentina
-KLDP, South Korea
-MetaReciclagem, Brazil
-NepaLinux, Nepal
-Saregune, Spain

ABOUT THE CHRIS NICOL FOSS PRIZE
Nowadays, more and more free software applications are being developed 
and many of them are more reliable than proprietary software. But FOSS 
is not a magical 'no cost' alternative to costly software. A lot of 
effort is still needed if everyday users in community and civil society
organisations are to start using FOSS en masse. The Chris Nicol FOSS 
Prize finalists are meeting this need by providing software adapted to 
local needs, training, documentation, networking opportunities and 
promoting the use and knowledge of FOSS.

En septiembre APC entregará un premio de 4.000 dólares a, como máximo, 
tres de las iniciativas más destacadas en tecnologías de la información 
y la comunicación (TIC) que se mencionan a continuación.

Los y las finalistas del Premio Chris Nicol de software libre 2007 que 
están siendo considerados por un jurado internacional de expertos y 
expertas son:

- Gleducar, Argentina
- KLDP, Corea del Sur
- MetaReciclagem, Brasil
- NepaLinux, Nepal
- Plan de Alfabetización Tecnológica y Software Libre de Extremadura, España
- Saregune, España

finalistas del Premio Chris Nicol de software libre cubren esa necesidad 
al ofrecer buenos manuales de uso de programas, apoyo técnico, 
capacitación, y una evaluación y crítica abiertas.

A l’heure actuelle, de plus en plus de programmes informatiques libres 
sont développés et beaucoup d’entre eux sont plus fiables que les 
logiciels propriétaires. Mais les logiciels libres ne sont pas une 
alternative gratuite magique aux logiciels coûteux. Un grand effort doit
encore être fourni pour que les utilisateurs quotidiens dans les 
communautés et dans les organisations de la société civile commencent à 
utiliser les logiciels libres en masse. Les initiatives du prix Chris 
Nicol répondent à ce besoin en fournissant des logiciels adaptés aux 
besoins locaux, de la formation, de la documentation, des opportunités 
de réseautage et en faisant la promotion de l’utilisation et de la 
connaissance au sujet des logiciels libres.
