Dear friends of public libraries,
the IGF (Internet Governance Forum) 2011 in Nairobi hosted a workshop about 'Do policy makers understand the role of libraries in mobilising the internet as a catalyst for development, innovation and freedom? http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/component/chronocontact/?chronoformname=WSProposals2011View&wspid=185
The workshop participants engaged in lively discussions and ended up agreeing that the potential of Internet enabled public libraries as an engine for development merited special attention. Meanwhile the IGF secretariat has given the green light for a Dynamic Coalition on Public Access in Libraries and we have created the PAL-DC mailing list. This list hopes to spark a discussion amongst the funders of public libraries (governments), the users (civil society), and the ICT private sector, for example are we overlooking public libraries as an engine for development; we also plan to engage with other major cross cutting IGF themes such as youth and the internet, and feature news about public library advocacy campaigns and innovative public library projects using ICT's to meet community needs in MDG priority areas.
We apologise that you were subscribed to the list before we could send out this mail, and hope you will stay with us and contribute your experiences, views and energies. Please let Anriette know if you want to be unsubscribed Anriette Esterhuysen <anriette at apc.org>
