Dear Rob

Thanks for the post to the list, good stuff! Where are you based, in the
KB in The Hague or elsewhere? I'm in the KB with IFLA, might be good to
talk at some point about if there is an potential co-operation between
Europeana Awareness and the IGF DC.

Cheers,

Stuart

Subject: [Pal-dc] Public libraries in Europeana

Dear Colleagues

Congratulations to all on the launch of this new coalition.

This is to introduce a potentially valuable new strand of public
libraries activity, recently launched under the EU's flagship Europeana
digital libraries initiative, as part of a newly launched major
three-year Best Practice Network project called Europeana Awareness,

Among the core goals of this work will be:

* the development and roll-out this year of one or more digital
services specifically tailored for delivery by public libraries to their
users, making use of the 20 million plus items of digital content from
all over Europe and beyond which are currently indexed by Europeana.

* the establishment of a network of public libraries to act as
collection points for user-owned content in a range of thematic areas,
which communities and individuals want to contribute for use through
Europeana and the wider Internet environment

Both of these initiatives are directed towards helping increase
citizens' engagement and participation in innovative and inclusive
public library activities. It is hoped that they will be supported and
tested through the establishment of an initial network of 100 leading
public libraries across Europe, currently under formation, before being
made available through any public library.

This work will be a focus of an international public libraries
conference later this year. Its possible relevance elsewhere In the
world will also be one of the topics covered in the Digital Libraries
Workshop on 10 May at IST Africa, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,
http://www.ist-africa.org/conference2012/.

Warm Regards
