Dear Colleagues,
The role of libraries in providing access to information, the importance of cultural heritage, public access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and the need for media and information literacy skills were among the recommendations included in a series of documents endorsed by the World Summit on the Information Society<http://www.ifla.org/node/7414> (WSIS) +10 High Level Event in Geneva, June 9-13 2014. More than 1600 participants including around 100 Ministers and leaders from international organizations, from business, civil society and academia attended the event.
The outcome documents followed months of negotiations through the WSIS Multistakeholder Preparatory Platform (MPP<http://www.itu.int/wsis/review/mpp/>), culminating in the WSIS+10 High Level Event (HLE<http://www.itu.int/wsis/implementation/2014/forum/>) in which IFLA advocated for the inclusion of library issues.
Please visit the IFLA website<http://www.ifla.org/node/8666> to read in detail about the recommendations.
Furthermore a report of the International Communications Union (ITU), also recently published, evaluates the achievements made towards the WSIS Targets. More background and information on this is also on the IFLA website<http://www.ifla.org/node/8667>.
Best,
Julia
