PRESS RELEASE

GHANA’S YOUTH BEGIN JOURNEY TOWARD WSIS ACCRA 2005

Wednesday, 15th December 2004 @ Kumasi

As part of activities lined toward World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS) African Regional Conference
in Accra from 2 – 4 February 2005 tagged “WSIS Accra
2005”, an Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) Campaign for young people was launched in Kumasi
on Wednesday, December 15th 2004. The event is the
first in the series of a ten (10) month Campaign
dubbed National Youth Information Society Campaign
(NYISC).

The Campaign, which is being organized under the theme
“Developing the Youth to Meet the Challenges of the
Information Society” aims at bringing together young
people from every corner of the country to get
developed, empowered, informed and deliberate on
issues toward the building of a sustainable
Information Society in Ghana. This includes
sensitizing the youth on the essence of ICTs as well
as give them practical training on how they can use
ICTs for their personal development.

The Campaign Coordinator, Mr. Leopold Armah stated
during the opening ceremony that ICTs are a pivotal
key to the successful and timely implementation of the
ultimate median goal of our country
.that is moving
from developing country status to development where
abject poverty would belong to the past.

According to him the future of our country lies in the
hands of all of us and more especially the young
people, because they are the best 'bridge' between the
present generation and the future. He indicated that
the energies of youth, coupled with their ability to
adapt, their creativity and their spirit of
enterprise, make them critical players in development.
Hence investing in them is a sure way of moving Ghana
from a third world status to a first world.

In a speech read on his behalf by Mr. N. Odoi, the
Deputy Regional Director of Education, the Minister of
Communications, Hon. Kan Dapaah said that the idea of
the Information Society seeks to ensure that emerging
economies benefit from the potentials of ICT in their
developmental agenda. He therefore called on all
stakeholders to ensure effective participation of all
in building an effective information society.

The Campaign is being organized by African Youth
Initiative and PRIME RESOURCES under the auspices of
Ministries of Communications and Education and in
collaboration with the United Nations Economic
Commission for Africa (UNECA). Other partners include
Ghana Information Network for Knowledge Sharing
(ginks) and TechGov.

About three hundred and fifty (350) young people and
their tutors drawn from junior and senior secondary
schools across the Ashanti Region participated in the
event. They were taken through topics such as;
opportunities for the youth within the emerging
Information Society and ICTS and its impact on
knowledge sharing, rural development and health.

Other activities lined up include National Youth ICT
Essay Competition; ICT Sensitization Outreach to the
five (5) Regional capitals; Online Discussion and
Media Encounters.
