The Foundation for Building Sustainable Communities is initiating a project focusing on gender equity and open source. The Women Open World Empowerment Movement (WOWEM) is a timely project addressing the needs of women in technology, with a focus on equity and empowerment. The project's initial focus is hearing from women in the field. The submissions will be compiled in a book and presented at the technology conference to be held in Peru. We look forward to your response and as well as a successful launch of the
book. 

Below you will find the outlines in both English and Español. We look forward to you submissions. The due date is August 16, 2004.

Gender Equity and Free and Open Source Software
Call for Chapter Submissions of a New Book

In recent years, academia, non-governmental organizations,
governments, and industry have become increasingly
involved in the development of F/OSS technologies, and in analyzing the social impact of that technology in diverse
settings, such as in developing countries, in education and in the workplace. WOWEM, a Gender Equity and F/OSS
research and education project started by the The Foundation for Building Sustainable Communities, is sponsoring a
book to be co-edited by Stacy Gildenston, current Director of
Certification for Linux Professional Institute www.lpi.org , and Lady
Murrugarra, Coordinator Group Work Gender and ICTs www.concytec.gob.pe/generotics  - Perú and Head Computer Center Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt - UPCH www.upch.edu.pe/tropicales

This book aims to incorporate both empirical studies and qualitative evaluations of
F/OSS technologies in which Gender Equity concerns have been involved.

For example: gender and F/OSS instructional technology
(computer-based teaching); gender-based cultural factors in the
use of F/OSS; human-F/OSS interaction and trends; the barriers of F/OSS adoption based on gender concerns; and gender-based organizational and work issues; as well as reviews of  the broader social implications of F/OSS technologies in Gender Equitable development. The focus of reviews and studies submitted for publication in this section
should reflect the book's focus on Gender Equity concerns, either by stating how F/OSS technology is relevant, or how it might be relevant, particularly with respect to local, regional, or international development issues.

WOWEM will accept submissions in English and Spanish, but alternate languages are welcome as approved by the
editors. Proposals for submission must be received by August 16th, 2004 at jmcknight6655 at rogers.com. We intend to
publish all quality work as space allows. Detailed outlines and/or first drafts must be completed by September 30th, 2004,
with the intent to have authors complete work by December 31, 2004. Alternate deadlines may be made available upon
request.

FULL LENGTH ARTICLES
Full Length Articles can be anywhere up to approximately 5,000 words in length, including (if needed) references, diagrams, statistics, etc. These articles may be qualitative, quantitative, or a combination of both. The intent of the editors is to allow for extremely diverse submissions. 

CASE STUDIES
Case Studies (up to 5,000 words) are highly regarded as material for submission. Since it is often difficult to create a
research design that is applicable to standard quantitative
statistical analysis or adequate control of variables, an
appropriate focus can be methodologies. These methods are best described in Case Study format. The editors wish to
encourage submissions from ALL experimental, educational, and organizational spheres. All Case Studies should
present an adequate description of the background of the presenting problem, any methodologies used, the outcomes,
and explanations for the outcomes observed.

SHORT PAPERS
The book will recognize that F/OSS is a diverse topic politically,
geographically, and culturally. The papers can be on any
type of research that has relevance to Gender Equity and F/OSS. We would like to see short reports that authors may feel are not likely to be published as a full article, but which appears to offer intriguing, preliminary work and findings. We
welcome both quantitative and qualitative research articles; pilot
studies; non-trivial assignments done by or set for
students; and even completely speculative papers that suggest a further avenue of study and research.

The length should be between 500-1,500 words, including any
references. Since space is at a premium include core
details that are required to help the reader understand the main
thrust of the article. The discussion should mention
possible flaws or alternative interpretations of the results, other
than the main interpretation presented by the author(s).
This is as much to indicate to the reader that the author(s) is/are aware of these possible flaws and alternative
interpretations. It also serves to instruct for the potential to
replicate work.

Creative Non-Fiction
Finally, the editors will accept short (up to 1,000 words) creative
non-fiction works describing personal experiences with
F/OSS and Gender Equity. Space for this may be somewhat limited, and this material may be used for alternate media,
such as on the WOWEM website.

Llamado para Sumisión de Capítulos de un Libro Nuevo

En los últimos años, el sector de educación, las organizaciones no gubernamentales, los gobiernos, y las industrias han comenzado a estar más envueltos en el desarrollo de tecnologías F/OSS, y en analizar el impacto social de esta tecnología en diferentes entornos, como por ejemplo en países en vías de desarrollo, en educación y en el lugar de trabajo. WOWEM, un proyecto de investigación y educación en Equidad de Género y F/OSS empezó por La Fundación para Construcción de Comunidades Sostenibles, está avalando el desarrollo de un libro que será coeditado por Stacy Gildenston, actualmente Directora de Certificación del Instituto Profesional de Linux www.lpi.org, y Lady Murrugarra, Coordinadora del Grupo de Trabajo de Género y ICTs-Perú www.concytec.gob.pe/generotics  y Jefa del Centro de Computo del Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt - UPCH www.upch.edu.pe/tropicales . 

Este libro apunta a incorporar estudios empíricos y evaluaciones cualitativas de tecnologías F/OSS en los que las preocupaciones de Equidad de Género han sido consideradas.

Por Ejemplo: género y tecnología F/OSS instructiva (enseñanza basado en computadoras); factores culturales de género
en el uso de F/OSS; interacciones humanas-F/OSS y las tendencias; las barreras para adoptar F/OSS basadas en
preocupaciones de género; y problemas de trabajo y organizacionales basados en género; así como también revisiones de implicaciones sociales más amplias de tecnologías F/OSS en el desarrollo de Equidad de Género. El enfoque de las revisiones y estudios sometidos para publicación en esta sección debería reflejar el enfoque del libro en preocupaciones de Equidad de Género, ya sea estableciendo como las tecnologías F/OSS
son relevantes, o como debería de ser relevantes, particularmente con respecto a los problemas de desarrollo
local, regional o internacional.

WOWEM aceptará sumisiones en inglés y español, pero idiomas alternativos son bienvenidos una vez que sean aprobados por los editores. Las propuestas de sumisión serán aceptadas hasta agosto 16 del 2004 en mcknight6655 at rogers.com. Nuestra intención es publicar todos los trabajos de calidad que el tiempo nos lo permita.
Detalles de los delineamientos y primeros borradores deberán ser completados antes de septiembre 30 del 2004, con la intención de que los autores completen el trabajo para diciembre 31 del 2004. Fechas límites alternativas podrían estar a disposición si se solicitaran.

ARTICULOS COMPLETOS

ESTUDIOS DE CASOS
Los estudios de casos (hasta 5,000 palabras) son altamente
recomendados como material de sumisión. Debido a que
es frecuentemente difícil de crear investigación que es aplicable a los estándares de análisis estadísticos cuantitativos o
control adecuado de variables, un enfoque apropiado puede ser
metodologías. Estos métodos están bien descritos en
formatos de Estudio de Casos. El deseo de los editores es incentivar la sumisión de TODAS las esferas
experimentales, educacionales y organizacionales. Todos los estudios de casos deberán ser presentados con una
descripción adecuada de los antecedentes del problema planteado, cualquier metodología usada, los resultados, y las
explicaciones de los resultados observados.

ARTICULOS CORTOS
El libro reconoce que F/OSS es tópico políticamente, geográficamente y culturalmente diverso. Los artículos podrían ser sobre cualquier tipo de investigación que tenga relevancia en Equidad de Género y F/OSS. Nos gustaría ver reportes
cortos que los autores piensen que no tienen probabilidades de ser publicados como artículos completos, pero que
parecen proveer resultados y trabajos preliminares intrigantes. Son bienvenidos ambos artículos de investigación
cualitativos y cuantitativos; estudios pilotos; asignaciones no
triviales hechas o establecidas por estudiantes; o incluso
artículos especulativos completos que podrían sugerir nuevas avenidas de estudio e investigación.

Tamaño del articulo deberá ser entre 500 a 1500 palabras, incluyendo referencias. Ya que el espacio es costoso, incluir
detalles centrales que son necesarios para que el lector entienda la premisa principal del artículo. La discusión deberá
mencionar posibles limitaciones o interpretaciones alternativas de los resultados que no sean la interpretación principal
del autor(es). Esto es importante para indicarle al lector que el
autor(es) esta conciente de las posibles limitaciones así
como posibles interpretaciones alternativas. También sirve como instrucción para potenciales réplicas del trabajo.

Trabajos Creativos No Ficción
Finalmente, los editores aceptaran trabajos cortos (hasta 1,000
palabras) creativos no-ficción describiendo experiencias
personales con F/OSS y Equidad de Género. El espacio para estos podría ser limitado, y este material podría ser usado
en medios alternativos, como en el Web site de WOWEM.
