Hi all - If anyone is interested in discussing the recent UN WGIG
consultation/civil society nominations to the WGIG and/or discussing
the financing caucus development and meeting in Berlin, these items
will be part of the agenda I've organized for a civil society
conference call this Friday, October 8th. Milton and Ralf have both
kindly agreed to give an update on these items to those who haven't
been involved, but I hope more of you will join the call for a

CPSR CONFERENCE: "MAKING THE GRADE? A REPORT CARD ON US POLICY AND
THE INFORMATION SOCIETY"

Georgetown University, Washington, DC
Experts from academia, civil society organizations, and the private
sector will analyze the Bush Administration's performance on a
variety of ICT issues and each give a "grade" on the merits and
later, a big picture overview of and cumulative final grade on
current US policy. The conference will conclude with an open
discussion on how to advance a public interest agenda that is suited
to the current technological and policy environment, and on the roles
that CPSR and other progressive advocacy organizations can play in
such an effort.

UN ICT TASK FORCE SEVENTH MEETING
November 18-20, 2004
Berlin, Germany
The UN ICT Task Force meeting will be held on the 19th and 20th and
will feature a Global Forum on "Enabling Environment for Digital
Development". Civil Society organizations are organizing a meeting
on the 18th to discuss developments in financing. News on on this
meeting will be available soon on http://www.worldsummit2005.org.

"AFRICA ELECTRONIC PRIVACY AND PUBLIC VOICE SYMPOSIUM"
December 6, 2004
Cape Town, South Africa
The purpose of this Symposium is to bring together African NGOs,
technical experts and policy makers to discuss Privacy, the World
Summit on the Information Society and the policy development of
Information and Communication Technologies. It is an opportunity for
the public voice to be heard on issues such as safeguarding
electronic privacy and protecting online speech, as well as African
perspectives on Internet governance and the World Summit on the
Information Society. The Symposium will be held in Cape Town, South
Africa at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island, on December 6,
2004 in conjunction with the ICANN meeting. The event will be split
into three sessions. Participants are encouraged to submit papers on
African perspectives on global Internet Governance, African Internet
Governance, or data protection or free expression online in Africa;
papers will be posted on the web site before the symposium. Please
send any inquiries, program suggestions, African NGO contacts, or
