2005: An action packed summer!
The campaign "Drop the Charges!" to support Supinya Klangnarong, freedom of expression and media campaigner, against the libel suit instigated by communication giant Shin Corp is doing well, but the campaign needs more signatures to encourage Shin to do the right thing and drop the charges. Find out more and encourage friends and colleagues to become involved. Solidarity in the region does not end here and CRIS encourages all of you to support the AMARC led Solidarity Campaign with Nepal. Get involved, get writing. And to keep you active, European Digital Rights (EDRI) is launching a petition against data retention in the Euro-zone aimed at the European Commission and the members of the European Parliament.

Government delegates from over 180 countries have negotiated the final text of the proposed Convention on Cultural Diversity (CCD), to be submitted to the UNESCO General Assembly in the fall of 2005.

Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD)
The first Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), will be held in Amman, Jordan, October 1-3, 2005.
This will be the largest-ever global gathering of media development
professionals, with participants from 100 countries and 300 media
support NGOs, independent journalists, broadcasters and media activists being invited to attend.

El objetivo principal del curso es diseminar los conceptos principales relacionados a los Derechos a la Comunicación, tema de relevancia mundial. Worldwide Petition Urges Shin Corp to Drop Charges Against Supinya Klangnarong in Thailand
Distinguished figures and free speech organisations add their names to the campaign.
Hundreds of signatories including distinguished public figures are putting their names to a petition calling on Shin Corp, Thailand, to drop criminal proceedings against Supinya Klangnarong. Supinya had noted in an interview she gave to the Thai Post that Shin Corporation profits had risen sharply since the Thai Prime Minister came to power. Shin Corporation was founded by the Prime Minister and is now owned by his family.

CMSI: Reunion regional en Rio, Junio 2005
Del 8 al 10 de junio se realizó en Río de Janeiro la Reunión Regional de América Latina y Caribe preparatoria de la segunda fase de la Cumbre Mundial de la Sociedad de la Información que se desarrollará en Túnez en noviembre de este año. La Declaración de Río de Janeiro y el Plan de Acción, los dos documentos oficiales aprobados en la Conferencia, reiteran el compromiso de crear "una sociedad de la información inclusiva" y reafirman la participación social como indispensable para su construcción.

European Digital Rights, together with the Dutch ISPs XS4ALL and Bit, launched an international petition today against mandatory data retention.
