Subject: [WSIS CS-Plenary] Women and AIDS
Dear colleagues,
Greetings for the New Year!
UNAIDS will be moderating an on-line discussion on Women and AIDS that will take place from January 10-21, 2005. This is part of a series sponsored by the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women. The input from this discussion will feed into the forthcoming ten-year review by the UN of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted by the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995.
We invite you to share your views and experiences and, in particular, to highlight the key issues that you believe should be emphasized on the international agenda in terms of actions at national and global level to address the increase in HIV prevalence among women and girls and its impact on them. We are looking for key messages, examples of progress made or good programmes, those that highlight men's role in partnership with women, examples of political leadership at local or national level, good slogans, and input from organizations of people living with HIV and caring for those affected. This will also serve as a follow-up to World AIDS Day, so that we can learn from the experiences of the many NGOs, UN agencies, organizations of people living with HIV/AIDS and activists working to mitigate the impact of HIV on women and girls.
The results of this discussion will be included in a report to the UN Department for the Advancement for Women to be incorporated into its presentations to the Commission on the Status of Women in March 2005.
