Zouhair Yahyaoui: défenseur des droits de l'homme

C'est avec un choc et une profonde tristesse que nous avons appris la 
nouvelle du décès de Zouhair Yahyaoui, un véritable militant des droits de 
l'homme et de la liberté d'expression.

Zouhair était le fondateur et le rédacteur en chef du site web satirique 
TUNeZINE et il jouissait du respect de la communauté internationale pour 
son travail au service des droits de l'homme. Emprisonné pour ses activités 
par le régime tunisien le 4 juin 2002, il n'avait été libéré qu'en novembre 
2003 à la faveur d'une campagne internationale de solidarité. Après sa 
libération, il avait continué à publier www.tunezine.com et à défendre les 
droits de l'homme. Il est mort subitement d'une crise cardiaque le 13 mars 
2005, à l'âge de 36 ans.

Nous, les membres du Groupe de l'Observation de la Tunisie au sein 
d'Échange International de la Liberté d'Expression (IFEX-TMG), avons eu la 
chance de mieux connaître Zouhair, qui nous est apparu comme un homme droit 
et courageux qui partageait notre lutte pour la liberté d'expression et 
contre la répression. Il fut une source d'inspiration pour de nombreux 
confrères et un activiste de stature internationale. Le mois dernier 
encore, lors d'une rencontre aux Nations Unies à Genève, Zouhair était en 
pleine forme et il tenait des propos courageux sur la situation de la 
liberté d'expression, la censure et la répression des droits de l'homme en 
Tunisie.

En janvier, des membres de la mission du Groupe de l'Observation de la 
Tunisie au sein de l'IFEX avaient rencontré Zouhair. Alors que nous étions 
assis dans un café à Tunis sous l'¦il vigilant de la police politique, il a 
témoigné longuement de son expérience en tant que cyberdissident, parlant 
du harcèlement, de l'emprisonnement et de la torture. Interrogé sur ses 
projets futurs, Zouhair a répondu sans hésitation. Il a dit "J'attends la 
chute du Dictateur".

Nous tenons à exprimer nos sincères condoléances à sa famille, à sa 
compagne Sophie et à ses amis proches.

Zouhair Yahyaoui: human rights defender

It is with a sense of shock and profound sadness that we have received the 
news of the death of Zouhair Yahyaoui, a genuine fighter for human rights 
and freedom of expression.

Zouhair was the founder and editor of the satirical website TUNeZINE and 
internationally respected  as a human rights defender. He was imprisoned 
for his activities by the Tunisian regime on 4 June 2002 and was not 
released until November 2003 after an international campaign of solidarity. 
After his release he continued to publish www.tunezine.com and to speak out 
on human rights. He died suddenly of a heart attack on 13 March 2005. He 
was 36 years old.

We, members of the International Freedom of Expression Exchange Tunisia 
Monitoring Group (IFEX-TMG), came to know Zouhair as a moral and courageous 
man who shared our struggle for the freedom of speech and against 
repression. He was an inspiration to many and an activist of international 
stature. Only last month, at a meeting of the United Nations in Geneva, 
Zouhair was in fine form when he spoke bravely on the state of freedom of 
expression, censorship and the repression of human rights in Tunisia.

In January, members of the IFEX Tunisia Monitoring Group mission met with 
Zouhair. As we sat in a cafe in Tunis under the watchful eye of the 
political police, he gave extensive testimony of his experience as a 
cyberdissident in which he spoke of harrassment, imprisonment and torture. 
When asked about his future plans Zouhair replied without hesitation. He 
said "I am waiting for the  fall of the Dictator".

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, to his companion Sophie 
and to his close friends.
