apparently for linux, you need to edit the about:config options in
mozila: (which was interesting, didn't even know about 'about:config'

http://www.gryzor.com/rtsp.html

Mozilla message : rtsp is not a registered protocol?

Many people seem to have experienced this problem on
Mozilla/firefox/firebird, running on Linux. As no web search leads to
any result, this minimal page tries to help.

Solution is simple : type in the address bar :
about:config

Mozilla displays all of its configuration variables. You need to add
one for rtsp. right click on any item.
new --> string --> network.protocol-handler.app.rtsp --->
/usr/X11R6/bin/realplay

Of course, you will have to customize the value to the actual path of
your installation of realplayer (or other software handling rtsp).

This page : http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202715
contains further informations about this issue.
