Dear All,
please find below some useful links from ITU on the WTD topics:
World Telecommunication Day 2005 http://www.itu.int/newsroom/wtd/2005/
"World Telecommunication Day 2005 marks two important anniversaries for ITU. It will be 140 years since we began helping the world communicate. >From the birth of the telegraph, through radio and television broadcasting to satellite communications and the Internet, the work of ITU has helped harness the power of science and technology to fulfill a basic human need for communication. However, 20 years ago, we realized that not all people were sharing in the social and economic benefits that telecommunications creates. In 1985 ITU released the landmark Maitland Report, known as the 'Missing Link', which was the first to clearly identify the digital divide. Since its publication, ITU has been working in earnest to bring the benefits of ICT to all of humanity."
ITU History http://www.itu.int/aboutitu/overview/history.html
"On 17 May 1865, after two and a half months of arduous negotiation, the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris by the 20 founding members, and the International Telegraph Union (ITU) was established to facilitate subsequent amendments to this initial agreement."

Hi, Robert and anyone who REALLY is interested in some background -- certainly far from comprehensive -- on World Telecommunication Day. There also exists a World Television Day, although this history I would not go into now. World Internet Day does not seem to exist. World Information Society Day does not technically exist either.
World Telecommunication Day seems to have existed in 1966 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the ITU, although I currently find no UN General Assembly Resolution in any of the surrounding years for such a Day.
The State of Qatar issued a set of 5 stamps for this occasion in 1966.
Other research demonstates that the 18th observance of the day was at least referred to in a speech in Nigeria by A.T. Ayuba, the Minister of Communications of Nigeria, in 1986, although my mathematics says that would have been the 20th World Telecommunication Day.
So, how will I celebrate which day?????
Best regards, Richard
