Apologies for pouring cold water on your rejoicing, but someone advocating
closer ties with the Bush administration will have more damaging impact on
all social causes than the little benefit we might get from having a female
German Chancellor. 

 

People are blinded by the gender of a person, giving little thought to what
the person actually stands for. In 1991 Merkel spoke out against what she
called the “rigid” quota system to promote greater numbers of women in
government, saying it was “constitutionally questionable and ill-equipped to
master e varied tasks of public administration and a flexible personnel
policy” (The Week in Germany, 26 April 1991, 2). She was accused of mouthing
policies set by Kohl (who at the time had appointed her minister for Women
and Youth) and of not furthering the position of women.
