Just found out about Amedeo Challenge ( http://amedeochallenge.org/ )
which aims to provide free access to top quality medical textbooks.
Their claims of "savings" seems a bit cooked, but it's an interesting
concept and use of online tools to enable this kind of open
publishing and free distribution process. For those in the health
field in developing countries, any alternative models that provide
them with well-researched health texts for free is a good thing.

Free access to information is a key aspect of Internet technology.
Free access to medical information is now standard for a variety of
services (PubMed, Amedeo, Free Medical Journals). However,
publication of top quality medical textbooks with free and anonymous
access (i.e., Influenza Report 2006, HIV Medicine 2005) is still in
its infancy.
Amedeo Challenge aims to change this situation by awarding prizes to
physicians who write and publish free medical textbooks. A total of
12,500 Euro has currently been allocated for this purpose (see below).
The topics listed below have been included in the first round of the
Amedeo Awards and we invite medical teams from all over the world to
participate in one of the contests. The first three groups to publish
a textbook on each of the topics will win 80 %, 16 %, and 4 % of the
corresponding award, respectively. For more details, please check the
Rules and Conditions.
In addition, the new textbooks will achieve global attention as we
shall announce it via the following communication channels:
Homepage of Free Medical Journals (>11,000 visitors/day)
Homepage of FreeBooks4Doctors (>4,000 visitors/day)
Citation in Free Medical Information (>120,000 downloads in 8 months)
Recommendation in the weekly Amedeo Newsletters (>128,000 subscribers)
A detailed description of how physicians can proceed to write and
publish their own textbooks has recently been published in Free
Medical Information.
We challenge you to write and publish a free medical textbook.
