FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME FOR HUMAN RIGHTS JOURNALISTS
The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is currently accepting
applications for the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship. This nine-month
fellowship, from September 2007 to May 2008, will provide the
opportunity for one woman journalist to pursue academic research as well
as hone journalistic skills in covering topics related to human rights
and social justice.
The chosen Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow will be given access to a broad
range of courses, seminars, working groups and other programs at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology and several other Boston-area
universities. In addition, the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow may spend time
at The Boston Globe or The New York Times, depending on her
qualifications and interests. The Fellow will also have a key role in
the annual Elizabeth Neuffer Forum on Human Rights and Journalism, which
provides an opportunity for journalists, academics, policy-makers, and
researchers to discuss current human rights issues.
Elizabeth Neuffer, winner of the 1998 Courage in Journalism Award, spent
13 years as a foreign correspondent for The Boston Globe as a human
rights journalist. She was killed in Iraq in May 2003. The Elizabeth
Neuffer Fellowship is a means to advance her life's mission of promoting
international understanding of human rights and social justice.
The Fellowship is open for applicants who will be dedicated to a career
in journalism in the print, broadcast or Internet media; be committed to
coverage of human rights and social justice; have three or more years of
journalism experience; and have excellent written and verbal English
skills. Deadline for submission of applications is on April 15, 2007.
