[WSIS CS-Plenary] Shirin Ebadi Nomination - Deadline for supports

Dear Meryem and All,

Hiroshi made an excellent point in requesting that Shirin Ebadi address
important issues represented by the Disability Family, in the event she is
selected as a speaker. Having Shirin Ebadi include important points would
enable the highlighting of important human rights and development areas
which may not be represented well, or at all, in the WSIS II outcome
documents.

Therefore following this lead, as the Health and ICT Working Group has
submitted its endorsement of Shirin Ebadi as a speaker at the opening
session, it is requested that Shirin Ebadi also refer to the need for all
people to have access to physical and mental health information and services
via ICT.

Both physical and mental health is a basic human right, yet often mental
health services is viewed as disconnected from health services. Mental
health is fundamental to overall health and is the foundation for learning,
thinking, communicating, self-esteem, and resilience, as well as successful
functioning in one’s work, family, community, and society. Yet the
majority of the world’s people do not receive treatment for
diagnosable mental disorders, nor support and intervention in the aftermath
of war, oppression, violations of human rights, terrorism, and other
traumatizing life events.

In reality without both physical and mental health as a foundation, it is
very difficult, and often impossible, to effectively implement the other
necessary requirements contained in the WSIS Declaration/Chapeau and Plan of
Action.

Dear Meryem:

Thank you very much for your initiative to nominate such an excellent
speaker for civil society at the Opening of WSIS in Tunis.

On behalf of the WSIS CS Disability Family Group, I am writing to endorse
Shirin Ebadi for CS Opening Session Speaker.

Regarding the contents of her speech, Disability Family Group kindly
requests the speaker to refer to the rights of persons with disabilities, in
particular rights of women with disabilities, in the digital divide context
so that 600,000,000 individuals with disabilities in the world may get
appropriate attention to secure the human rights by bridging the digital
gap.

Best regards,

Hiroshi Kawamura
