I don't want to get into a discussion about the pro's and con's of
one particular document format or another. So instead, let me come up
with two suggested policies for the list in regards to documents:
regards,
Robert
**** Suggested List policies ****
(1) To reduce bandwidth - Policy on how to share/send files ...
Wherever possible, documents should not be attached - but instead
placed on a site where people can fetch them.
If there's no central repository where CS has a copy of it's
documents - then we should have one...
I'm more than happy to offer space on the existing WSIS related wiki
and file directory that i have to be used by anyone here. URL is -
http://cms.privaterra.org/tiki-list_file_gallery.php?galleryId=7
(2) To recognize we all use different OS platforms - Policy on file
formats .....
let's not enter into a debate as to which one is best, worse or
anything of the kind..(personally, i'd rather have that debate take
place elsewhere, as it's not the exclusive issue affecting us right
now) instead, let's save and share our documents in as platform and
application independent format as possible.
Thus, if you can save documents in RTF, HTML or PDF format - then, please do.
If i'm not mistaken, most - if not all - word processing programs
have the option to save in RTF, HTML and/or PDF.
(personal note - i like PDF as it allows one to see documents written
in non-european character sets much better, without the need of
loading tons of extra fonts..)
As I may have referred to at the beginning - let's understand the
fact that those of us on this list are using a variety of different
platforms, operating systems and programs to communicate. Let's
respect the individual choice we've all made and be as accommodating
as possible.
Let's respect that choice and move on to what's technically required
to make everyone happy. If RTF documents can help - then, let's
suggest (where possible) people use it.
