Dear Friends and Colleagues,

DPI’s World Summit 2004 has for its focus the issue of diversity within the disability movement; one of the primary focal areas of the Summit is the concerns of women with disabilities. An important event for women, International Women’s Day, is coming up on Monday, March 8, 2004. On this day, celebrated annually since it was declared by the United Nations in 1977, we recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress, as well as the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, requires the active participation, equality and development of women, and we acknowledge the contribution of women — with and without disabilities — to the strengthening of international peace and security. It is also a time to reflect on how far women have come in the struggle for equality, to assess the challenges facing women with disabilities in contemporary society, and to consider ways to enhance the status of women in the disability movement, as well as in general society.

Many events are being held in celebration of International Women’s Day:
• In Winnipeg, Canada, world renowned activist Leslie Feinberg came to speak to students at the University of Manitoba on March 3rd about the history of human rights movements and the necessity for cross-movement unity.
• In Canberra, Australia, the High Court of Australia, National Library of Australia, National Gallery of Australia and Old Parliament House will be lit in purple, the traditional women’s colour, until March 12th.
• In Bristol (UK), Valerie Davey (MP) will unveil a plaque to Lady Emmeline Pethick Lawrence at the place of her birth in Charlotte Street on March 8th.
Those are just a few examples of the variety of events going on around the world. Join in on the celebrations in your community, and be a part of recognizing the rights, accomplishments, and challenges of women in your area and around the world!
