To those who encounter these problems I can only advise to change to
gmail, it is the best system for managing mailing lists I've seen. It
shows the messages as a conversation if people reply to each other, it
hides the messages you've already read, it skips the quoted text
(which can substantially reduce the lengths of the message), and so
on.
If necessary, I can invite up to 50 people to gmail.
